Say Cheese! Tips For Photographing Littles

We all know photographing babies is no easy task – so we’ve recruited talented baby and family specialty photographer, Anupa Shah, to share her top tips for recording your baby’s best moments…

1. FIND GOOD LIGHT

Look for a room in your home that has good natural light. However, natural light in the middle of the day can be harsh for taking pictures, instead look for areas with shade. Indirect soft light is best to bring out the softness of your baby’s skin.

Depending on what mood you want to capture, you can use the light to illuminate your subject. Shoot with the light behind to create a silhouette, or angle the light for a more moody portrait.

For outdoor shots, the best time is the golden hour which is the hour after sunrise or before sunset. The light is softer and warmer, and shadows are longer, making the pictures more magical.

2. PLAY TIME

Once you have the lighting sorted, work out when’s best to capture your baby in a good mood. The best time for capturing candid moments are typically right after a good nap or feed. It always helps to play along with your little ones for some really authentic pictures!

3. EXPLORE DIFFERENT ANGLES

Upside down, up in the air, you love your baby from every angle don’t you? So why not explore the same behind the camera. These different perspectives lend to a great mix of pictures to go into your family album.

4. THE LITTLE THINGS

Those tiny toes, the long eyelashes, that one toothed smile, the messy face during mealtime... it’s the little things that remind you of how little your little really was that makes for the best timeless memories!

5. CAPTURE THE EVERYDAY EVERY DAY

Their innocence, curiosity, tantrums, those real candid moments – it's their story and yours as a family. Record these special moments; they will translate into some beautiful and fun memories to share with your child when they are all grown up.
